HSSC

The High School Service Conference (HSSC) committee has the opportunity to plan a conference for over 100 high school students. The purpose of the High School Service Conference is to expose Texas high school students to the ideals and traditions of community service in a college environment.

A key part of this conference will be the students’ active participation in a service project. We believe that giving back to the community goes hand in hand with developing the relationships and leadership skills that are essential to a student’s growth. We hope that the students leave with a handful of new friends, fun memories, and a new found appreciation for community service.

Leadership

The Leadership sub-committee is responsible for organizing the service project and finding speakers for the weekend. The purpose of the service project and the following reflection activity is to illustrate to the high school students the effects service can have on a community and how they can become involved in service related activities during college. The speakers will reinforce the value of service and leadership that is emphasized throughout the conference. This year's speakers will be Joe Tortorice, the CEO of Jason's Deli, as well as Patrick Williams and. The leadership committee will also organize a student panel of students from various organizations to answer any questions about college life that the high school students may have.

Operations

Operations manages transportation, registration, advertisement and catering for the conference. Along with these details, the committee also puts together a brochure about the conference and designs the conference t-shirts. Operations also raises funds for the conference through grants and fund raisers. This money goes toward the students who will be attending the conference through the Prospective Student Center as well as toward any other aspect of the conference that requires extra funding.

Curriculum

Curriculum prepares the itinerary for the entire conference. They also plan all of the small group times, which provide opportunities for the students to discuss what they have experienced. To supplement the planned activities, the Curriculum Committee creates a booklet with the schedule as well as information about the conference and about A&M in an interactive format.

Promotions

One of the main tasks of the Promotions Committee is to recruit a greater number and variety of students to attend the conference. By reaching out to high school friends of the college freshmen within MSCC FISH, the committee hopes to recruit a broader base of high school students. The rest of this committee's responsibilities relates directly to the tasks of the Operations Committee with a focus on the designing aspects of the t-shirts, brochures, name tags, etc...
